Bordeaux Cru Bourgeois vs. Bourgogne
My first post upon returning to Paris, after a week in Russia. OMG the workload and stress load is building up exponentially in the MPA. I don’t know how I’m gonna do it with 6 weeks left and like 8 projects pending and 3 scheduled wine trips in May! Anyways I digress, let’s get back to the much less depressing topic of wine. Today I attempted a classic back-to-back tasting of Bordeaux rive gauche and Bourgogne.
Domaine Alain Mathias is located in the town of Epineuil, right next to Tonnerre, which is 20 kilometers Northeast of Chablis. Naturally this region is better known for its vibrant white burgundies. This particular domaine however also produces reds like in the case of today’s bottle, which originates from the vineyards of Epineuil.
Chateau Arnauld, the better known of the two producers tasted tonight, is a cru bourgeois located in the Haut-Medoc. Theil Roger, proprietor of Chateau Poujeaux, purchased the chateau in 1976. Today François Theil runs the chateau’s operations. Chateau Arnauld is located north of Margaux in the village of Arcins. The wine is typically a blend of around 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. The wine is aged for 12 months in 40% new oak barrels
